Earth Day Project 2010 - Looking Behind
What a day!
The weather was perfect, with a clear, warm day. The hands were many and willing. And, the attitude was one of cheerful service!
In the end, the final count was 52 Scouts, Scouters, family menbers and friends stepping up to make a significant dent in the illegal dumping that takes place in the area of North Branch Parkway in Springfield, MA. Couches, toilets, tires, and goat heads were just a few of the treasures that were found in the forested area between North Branch Parkway and Grayson Drive. In the end, a pile of debris that was approximately 20 cubic yards in size when the day ended.
Sadly, however, those who feel that it is OK to dump trash illegally we soon to discover the pile, and added their excess to it before Springfields diligent DPW came by on Monday to remove the pile. Par for the course, within 2 weeks after the massive cleanup effort, the roadside is littered once again with Dunkin Donuts cups, McDonalds bags, and Taco Bell wrappers. One could be lead to believe that if most roadside trash, fast food restaurants packaging makes up a large volume of
the castoffs.
